Based on the view that politeness is not a fixed set of rules but a social practice that adapts to changing historical conditions, the collective volume Politeness Crossing Times and Spaces examines how norms of appropriate verbal and nonverbal behaviour emerge, shift and are renegotiated over time. The contributions show that changes in politeness rarely take the form of sudden breaks but instead develop through gradual and often subtle processes grounded in specific communicative situations.
